Wyclef Jean To Run For President Of Haiti; Announcement Next Week!

Hip-Hop star Wyclef Jean will announce his bid for the President of Haiti, a source has confirmed with AllHipHop.com exclusively.

Sources close to Wyclef confirmed with AllHipHop.com that the rapper will announce his bid for the country’s highest office next Thursday, on August 5th.

The 37-year-old was born in Haiti, but immigrated to the United States at the age of 9-years-old, when he landed in Brooklyn, before settling in South Orange, New Jersey.

As a member of The Fugees and as a solo artist, Wyclef has sold millions of records, in addition to collaborating with artists like Paul Simon, Gloria Estefen, Destiny’s Child, Carlos Santana and others.

The rapper sprung into action on January 12th, when his native land was leveled by a 7.0 earthquake that left 300,000 people dead over a million others displaced.

Even prior to the earthquake, Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti organization raised funds for the country, but after the deadly earthquake, the rapper helped raise over $10 million dollars in less than three months.

The rapper will make his official announcement just two days prior to the country’s August 7th deadline to submit his plan for running for President.

Analysts are predicting that Wyclef Jean will easily win the race with his financial connections, influence among the Haitian youth and his political influence around the world.

The news of his candidacy has stoked fears in opponents planning to run for the head office in November.

"I think if Wyclef is allowed to run he will have a straight victory," political leader and former presidential candidate Himmler Rebu told Reuters yesterday.

Jean, who maintained his status as a citizen of Haiti, was in the country yesterday, where he was preparing for his upcoming campaign.

The rapper/musician also has political clout in the country.

His uncle, Raymond Alcide Joseph, has been the Haitian ambassador to the United States since 2005 and helped Wyclef’s drive to raise money and relief aid for victims of the massive earthquake.

Elections are slated for November 28th.

Sean "Diddy" Combs Reveals Ten Easy Steps To Success!

Sean Combs, Hip Hop business mogul and CEO of Bad Boy Records, reveals ten ways for any individual to discover success. Having a non-stop work ethic summarizes the list, but he explains to VIBE in depth, the key to it all: 1. Work hard. Then work harder. 2. Believe. Never loose your faith! 3. Count your pennies. 4. Be humble. 5. Listen. 6. Love. 7. Don’t make the same mistake twice. 8. Never settle. 9. Be confident. 10. Don’t get comfortable.

Working hard, and then working harder is self explanatory. However, Puff is living proof of someone who continues to work hard. From being a rapper, to owning a successful clothing line, being the CEO of a multi-billion dollar record label, being an actor, having a reality television show, and having his very own alcoholic beverage.

In a recent interview with Toure of FUSE TV, Puff even revealed an explanation to rule number 7. “I think one of my biggest business mistakes was not realizing that everybody wasn’t like me. Everybody didn’t have the drive and determination; everybody’s just not built for that. I think that some people need more time, and more nurturing...I mean artists that I’ve had. I’ve gotten older, I’ve become a little bit more nurturing and I’ve been a little more patient.”

Combs recently launched a new website entitled DiddyBlog.com. This website was designed specifically to motivate people.

“The blog is an all 100 percent positive blog. It’s about inspiring you, motivating you, empowering your dreams. It’s not about any news about who’s dating who, who’s not doing good, who got exposed today, who’s this, who’s that, you can go to the other sites for that. It’s about motivation and inspiration and love -- the love movement has begun. Even haters are allowed to come to DiddyBlog.com. It makes your teeth whiter. We want all of your advice, your constructive criticism, your positive notes because we want to make DiddyBlog the best it can be and we want you guys to give us the time to make it the best it can be. Can you imagine that I will not be selling CIROC on there? I will not be selling Sean John, I will not be talking about my movies or television shows. I can’t believe I’m saying this but yeah, I’m saying it. No Diddy promotions. It’s all about the love. I love you guys, DiddyBlog.com.”

In an exclusive interview with radio personality Tim Westwood, Diddy speaks about finding peace and happiness within himself.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s just a point in my life, being in the industry, I have nothing but good things to say to people, I have nothing but positive energy to give, I don’t care if you like me, you don’t like me. I love you and I’mma keep doing my thing. Hopefully you’ll get it one day but I’ve been blessed to have a lot of fans and a lot of people love me and I just want my injection to be what I feel is great about people. I wanna inspire people -- I don’t wanna bring them down. I don’t wanna talk about no BS. I don’t have no time for none of that. I wanna uplift us.”

Richie Loop psyched by Sumfest performance!

As he prepares for appearances as a Smirnoff ambassador for this coming Dream Weekend, Richie Loop was this week still savouring his break-out performance
on Reggae Sumfest, dancehall's biggest stage.

From all accounts the rapidly rising entertainer did nothing to hurt his cause when he performed on International Night. This during the same week when his hit song, My Cupp, was named the Hot Pick of the Week on the Heineken World Charts show. In short, the past few days have been especially good for Scikron/Big Yard's newest shining star.

"The impression I got for Sumfest was, wow," Loop said, as he prepared to start working on a new rhythm in his 'lab' at Big Yard on Tuesday night. "Seeing that I am not that experienced at performing, I got remarkable feedback," he said.

In what has been described as a very good debut performance Richie Loop performed his hit song My Cupp, Cupp Cupp, Party Time, All I Really Know, Gal Whine and Me Want Me Own, creating a party atmosphere for the thousands in attendance. Richie said when he left the stage he went in search of Livingston (his manager) eager to find out how well he did. He was pleased with the critique. "Good one," he said Livingston told him.

But his manager's words weren't the only words of praise he received. "Members of the media and others from other countries expressed an interest in having me perform overseas," he said, his tired eyes brightening at the recollection. "People were handing me cards telling me they wanted me to perform in Canada, Cayman, Trinidad and other countries."

Richie Loop believes his Sumfest performance now sets the bar for his performances from this point on. "Every time you step on stage you have to make sure you entertain the crowd. Me, at Sumfest was me just being myself, enjoying myself and entertaining the crowd," he said, adding that he was thankful to the promoters for giving him the opportunity as well as his support team who helped him do so well.

He also believes his performance will show people that there is much more to him than meets the eye. "I want people to know that I am not a one-hit wonder or just a laid back guy who doesn't know how to work a stage. I am a fun guy at the studio and on the stage and I just want people to enjoy the music," he said. "It will only get better from here."

Preacher seeks clash with Kartel - Says he is leading the generation astray!

A local evangelist is demanding a musical clash with Dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel.

Evangelist Taylor, who didn't want the name of the church he attends published, says he wants Isaiah Laing, the promoter of the annual Sting show, to arrange a clash between himself and Kartel.

"I want Laing to organise that clash, because Mr Vybz Kartel has been leading the generation astray for too long and we have to stop him. He is deceiving them," said the evangelist.

He accused the deejay of several immoral actions: "He's high in the demonic world, says he reads The Da Vinci Code book ...," the evangelist claims.

"We need to trample Vybz Kartel, we're fed up of him now. Other pastors and I sit down and we listen to his songs, he is the one, there is a great force behind him," he further stated.

gun lyrics

He said in the deejay's music you can feel the power behind it. "His words are powerful. I want to clash him and after I beat him we will baptise him in the name of The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit. We'll put him in the church and let him teach Sunday school," he said.

The evangelist said that Kartel is a well-educated young man, who is fooling around and not using his education in the right way. Pointing out how sensible the deejay was, the evangelist referred to his song Thank You Jah in which he quotes a section of the Bible.

He complained, however, that instead of doing more positive things, the deejay is passing on gun lyrics to the children.

"He sings that the barba boy run but the preacher will never run. We don't want the Portmore Empire, because once I get him, I get the whole Gaza. I will call him up and tell him that he's destroying the youths, the spirit of the Lord will speak through me. I want him to become a speaker for the Lord as he has the ability to turn Jamaica around. He's the only one we see with that power," he added.

repent

"We want him to surrender his life to the Lord. When I win we're going to bring him to Caymanas Bay and baptise him and put him in the church to preach the gospel. If he repents and turns his life to the Lord he will get back his visa," said the evangelist.

Taylor said Kartel is the only artiste he is interested in changing. "He is the only one I want. Mavado, Bounty Killer and all those others artistes are nothing compared to him. If we get him we get a whole multitude of young people back into the church. The church will be filled with young people because he's the leader of the next generation," he added.

According to the evangelist, "I will clash Kartel for free, no money, just want him to turn over him life and stop leading the youth in the wrong direction."

Efforts by THE WEEKEND STAR to get a comment from Kartel in reference to the evangelist's wishes, were unsuccessful up to press time.

Wasp is the yute from the ghetto who has nothing, but trying to make things better. The celebrity cameos are people who most onlookers would expect to always be comfortable and happy, however, they are making it known also that they have times when 'nutten nah gwaan' for them."

Bounty Cross over Ele's loss - Does not see gov't input in music !

Last Tuesday, a mere two days before he was scheduled to perform at Reggae Sumfest 2010's Dancehall Night, deejay Elephant Man's Mercedes Benz was seized in a tax evasion operation. Elephant Man performed on his own, then in combination with Bounty Killer at the close of the latter's set with This Is How We Do It.

And on Saturday, during an unexpected appearance along with Mavado at the Sumfest press conference, held at the Iberostar Hotel in Montego Bay, Bounty Killer expressed his dissatisfaction with the relationship between taxation and government input into music.

"I don't see any development of the government towards music," he said, noting that an aspiring artiste cannot get a loan to assist in getting a demo done. However, Bounty said, "when you burst (buss) the taxman after you".

"At least some percentage must go back towards the revenue it come from," he said.

As he was on Dancehall Night, when Bounty was determined to speak on current issues to the audience, at the press conference he also addressed a number of matters. "I am the poor people's governor. I am always on the front defending the people," he said from the get go. Mentioning the killing of Voicemail's Oneil and Cobra being shot and wounded, the incursion into Tivoli and the then just ended state of emergency, he addressed the overall tone of Dancehall Night.

"This morning was really warm and together. I even big up Vybz Kartel over and over. We do not have to be friends and associates, but we have to live in the same alliance. We do not have to be in the same allegiance, but we are all Jamaicans," he said.

He continues to press for some consideration to be given to extending dancehall's official hours. "The 2 o'clock shutting down, it need to be addressed," he said, noting that in the Corporate Area consideration has to be given to other people. "But when we go over like Caymanas Polo Club, that is ridiculous. That is in the bush," he said.

And he advised the power that be "like how them go look for the bad guys in Tivoli, they must go look for the good guys. I want the government to be enforced with a state of urgency, just as they had a state of emergency".

Protoje enjoying musical success!

Fast-rising reggae artiste Protoje says he was pleased with the support given to him while he performed for the first time at the much prolific Reggae Sumfest event, held last weekend at Catherine Hall, in Montego Bay, St James.

And after making an inspiring debut performance on International Night 1, which also saw top R&B singer Chris Brown, the smooth- talking singer, born Oje Ken Ollivierre, rounded off another mouth-watering display at Tuesday Night Live, held at Village Blues Bars, in Barbican, St Andrew.

However, Protoje said it was like a dream come through when he graced the stage last Friday.

"It was a really good experience and I appreciate the response that I got from the audience. I've always been in the audience at Sumfest, now I was performing in front of an audience. Just having that vibes onstage was a really wonderful experience," he said.

Ele wants his Benz returned!

Deejay Elephant Man wants back his Mercedes Benz after what he feels was abuse by the Inland Revenue Department.

Last week, the deejay, born O'Neil Bryan, got a rude awakening when the Special Enforcement team at the Inland Revenue with assistance from the St Andrew police swooped down on his house off Hope Road and seized his red Mercedes Benz. The operation was aimed at seizing assets to settle millions of dollars in unpaid taxes.

When THE STAR spoke to the deejay's lawyer Roderick Gordon yesterday, he explained that his client is adamant about getting back his vehicle. He commented, "Elephant Man wants back his car, he feels he has been abused by the authorities, and used as an example to the entertainment community, he's very upset about it."

According to Gordon, it was "coincidental" that the vehicle was seized last Tuesday, two days before Dancehall Night of Reggae Sumfest, which was held in Montego Bay.

delinquent

Gordon explained that the deejay had made a payment, in the millions, to the Inland Revenue at the end of March, with discussions made for him to continue making payments in the future. In March, the tax department had placed Elephant Man on a list of 50 high profile delinquent taxpayers.

"He feels they are giving people the impression of him being a chronic delinquent which he's not," Gordon stated.

He told THE STAR that the deejay wants his legal team to look into his legal and constitutional rights concerning the matter. He elaborated that the legal team received all the documents from the deejay yesterday, after his slew of recent performances were over, and are now looking forward to proceed to the next step.

While they have not made contact with the Inland Revenue Department as yet, Gordon said they plan to contact them soon. Currently, they are looking into three options which includes a payment for the redemption of his vehicle, a settlement between the deejay and the Inland Revenue or to challenge their position through court proceedings.

Meris Haughton, the director of communications at the tax department, had previously explained to THE STAR that in cases like these, delinquent taxpayers have 10 days to pay off their arrears or the confiscated asset will be auctioned. She said if the proceeds from the auction does not cover the debt, the taxpayer could face criminal or civil charges.

Elephant Man is known for songs such as Sweep and This is How We Do It featuring Bounty Killer.

Dream weekend's season bands sold out!

According to a release sent to THE STAR the season bands, which allows a patron access to all seven parties, have been sold out much earlier than expected.

PJ Wright of the Dream Team says the bands have gone very quickly with many outlets reporting that they have run out.

Wright said, "last year all our armbands were sold out before the first day of parties. We expected it this year and actually printed additional bands to cover the extra demand, however, those are now also sold."

He added, "based on the overwhelming demand, we will be providing a few extremely limited season bands at our redemption centre at Margaritaville, Negril." The limited tickets will be made available from Friday, July 30, and will be sold during the course of that day as long as supplies last.

"These season armband tickets will not be presold but rather be sold on the 'day of', therefore, we will not be able to offer you our heavily discounted price of $10,000. These bands will retail for $12,000," he explained.

exciting weekend experience

"If, regrettably, you do miss the opportunity to purchase these 'day of' armbands, you can still attend all of our events and share in what promises to be the most exciting weekend experience ever, by purchasing tickets for individual events," he ended.

According to Marsha Lumley, brand manager for Smirnoff, the weekend has certainly attracted much attention.

Lumley said, "it is no surprise that consumers have taken full advantage of the early bird and presold tickets. Smirnoff Dream weekend offers a series of seven of the most premium, most exclusive parties for the Emancipation weekend. Added to that, we have the world's top vodka and hottest beer for the hottest occasions on board. What more could anyone ask for?"

She added in the release, "the organisers and sponsors are working together with the venue management, town officials and the police to ensure that everything goes well this weekend. I encourage everyone to come out and share in this experience."

Marshall's 'My Heart' for MTV Africa!

Deejay Wayne Marshall is on a high with the premiere of his My Heart video on MTV Base in Africa.

MTV Base is a 24-hour music and general entertainment channel from MTV Networks International with locations all around the world.

When THE STAR spoke to Marshall yesterday he explained, "the video was added to MTV Base in Africa, they are using it as a promotion for this reggae chart which they just started to kinda advertise the chart. This is really hype and magical and it happened in such a short space of time."

The video was premiered almost two weeks ago and was directed by film maker Storm Saulter and features singjay Mavado. The video premiered on MTV Base yesterday and Marshall is excited about the potential for the song explaining that the station gets over 7 millions views. Coming on the heels of the MTV premiere will be another remix of the song done by R&B singer Estelle.

track is moving

Marshall said, "Estelle is featured on the remix, she sent her tracks already and it's just crazy how this track is moving. Estelle and I are friends on twitter and I sent her the track and she heard it without seeing the video as yet and said this is gonna be a smash song. When I sent her the video, she said she has to get on this and sent her part. We're currently mixing it now and hopefully it should be out by next week."

In the song Marshall sings about a girl who has done him wrong and messes with his heart. The song was done almost two months ago and produced by Baby G and was later remixed by Mavado. In the Estelle remix she plays the part of his sister who is supporting him and 'cussing' the girl who has messed with Marshall. "It's crazy how she wrote it, it's something I would have never thought to write," he added.

The song was also on 'Jam Hot Record of the Week' on BBC's 1 Xtra and is getting constant rotation locally with a number of unofficial remixes taking place from persons out of Jamaica. For Marshall, he admits that he has been knocking on the door of cross over success for years and feels that this is his time to make it big.

He said, "this is my time to represent Jamaica to that next level, I just need to get that run. Right now, I'm doing this for my son, Giomar, he's my inspiration. I want him to look up to me and for people to tell him his father was a great artiste."

The deejay has a number of songs coming out soon for the likes of Don Corleon, Baby G and Stephen McGregor as he tells fans to expect the unexpected as he explores new genres and broadens this horizons. He also has a collaboration with Damian Marley and Tarrus Riley to be released later this year.

According to Wah Wa, "It has always been a goal of mine to work on the airwaves because I believe I have a lot of positives to contribute to the listening public. On that note, I want to use this forum to thank everyone who has been instrumental in my career."

When asked about going live last weekend, he added: "The feedback has been tremendous, so just stay tuned and listen out for me zipping the airwaves."

Later this month, fans can catch ZJ Wah Wa and the Darkcide International family at a number of high-profile events such as Summer Bar-raage (July 24), Skintasy and Dripz (July 25), Club Jamaica Jamaica (August 7) and Klump - The Brazilian Fiesta (August 15) among others.

Elephant Man's assets seized - Aimed at settling millions of dollars in unpaid taxes!

Deejay Elephant Man got a rude awakening yesterday when the Special, Enforcement team at the Inland Revenue, with assistance from the St Andrew police, knocked him up at his residence to seize assets for millions he owes in taxes.

The inland revenue department said the operation was aimed at seizing assets to settle millions of dollars in unpaid taxes.

Meris Haughton, the director of communications at the tax department, said the operation was conducted yesterday with the enforcement team and the police travelling to several locations in search of assets belonging to Elephant Man.

The team visited Elephant Man's popular Havendale home first, where they claimed to have found nothing of value. After this investigations led the team to a house off Hope Road in St Andrew, where a red convertible Mercedes Benz vehicle belonging to the deejay was seized. While declining to disclose the exact amount owed by Elephant Man, Haughton said his arrears are in the millions.

Haughton explained that in cases like these, delinquent taxpayers have ten days to pay off their arrears, or the confiscated assets will be auctioned. She said if the proceeds from the auction do not cover the debt, the taxpayer could face criminal or civil charges.

When contacted by THE STAR, the deejay, whose real name is O'Neil Bryan, quickly gave his cell phone to his lawyer Roderick Gordon. Gordon confirmed that the tax officials had visited Elephant Man's home, stating how surprised he was with the speed with which the team moved.

really shocked

Gordon said, "He was really shocked this morning. He's telling me police nearly hit down his door. He wasn't sure what's going on, they knocked it hard, something to do with tax obligation they say he owes."

According to Gordon, he will be looking over the various paperwork to deal with the situation as soon as possible.

While the car was being placed on a tow truck, the deejay huddled inside the house with his advisers and did not speak to reporters gathered outside.

In March, the tax department had placed Elephant Man on a list of 50 high-profile delinquent taxpayers.

Elephant Man is known for songs such as Sweep and This is How We Do It, featuring Bounty Killer. He is expected to perform this Thursday at Dancehall Night for Reggae Sumfest.

Gaza Slim's One Man blows up overseas!

Touted as Gaza Kim's replacement, dancehall fans have been wondering about just how good Vanessa Bling a.k.a Gaza Slim would be. They need not wonder anymore as she has already scored a major solo hit with the single, One Man, which is a fixture on the FiWi Choice Top ten charts, and of course, she collaborated famously with Popcaan and Kartel on the breakout 2010 hit, Clarks.

She is a bonafide star, just ask any one in her home town of Lawrence Tavern.

"The way the people approach me now is different, a crazy love in the
streets. Clarks made me into a star and mi feel proud of myself and mi
family proud of me as well," she told BOUNCE.

The singer has released a number of songs with the Empire a few
months ago. Apart from the combination single called One Man featuring
Kartel, a solo song called Mean Man, another hard-hitting
collaboration called Bedroom Bathroom with Sheba, and a highly touted
combination with Vybz Kartel himself called 'When You Touch Me'.

"Vybz Kartel plans to do a video for One Man soon as well," she said.

She is not surprised at the great success she has enjoyed in only a
few short months.

"I am not surprised because mi know that the songs dem woulda shot
because of Kartel, and I know I am talented, so this was expected, but
it's great. In June, I returned to Oberlin High to do a concert and
ovation I got from the students was tremendous, I would like to thank
Ms. Clark for the opportunity to come and perform...it was sick, the
girls screamed when I did One Man," she said, smiling.

Born Vawnessa Faddler, the 18 year-old grew up in the Lawrence Tavern
community in St. Andrew. She attended Oberlin High where she
concentrated on business-oriented subjects before graduating in 2008.
While growing up, she attended the Grant Hill Pentecostal church in
Lawrence Tavern where she participated in the church choir. She was
also active in the high school choir, and once she left high school,
she decided that she wanted to be a professional singer.

Interestingly, she recorded her first song, Only God Knows with the
controversial comedic tag team of Twins of Twins two years ago. And
now that she has joined the hottest crew in dancehall today, the
Portmore Empire, her stocks are on the rise.

Asked how her parents felt about her joining the Empire, she responded:
"Well, they're proud of me, they feel I have the potential to make it."

She doesn't seem ruffled by the controversies that rocked the Empire
earlier this year.

"I am here to do my thing to the best of my ability and to hopefully
learn and improve and become a better singer," she said.

Asked what she could bring to the Portmore Empire, she laughed and remarked:
"Well, I can write my own songs and I have my own unique flavour, the
world will soon see that."

Vybz Kartel christened her Gaza Slim because of her thin waist line,
and petite bone structure.

"I like the name very much. The first time I heard it, I laughed, then
it just kind of grew on me...I always smile when I hear it called."

Kartel to voice album after his prison release!

Sources close to Vybz Kartel aka Addi the Teacha say the Teacha will spend the first two days of freedom
after his long incarceration voicing an album about his experiences and thoughts while in jail.

"The word is that Kartel has about a whole album worth of songs in his head and as he comes out, he is going to do an album kinda inspired by Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues, it ah go sick, sorta like a man stuck in prison but life still goes along without him and what runs through a man's head when he is locked up unfairly etc," the source said.

Vybz Kartel made a cult classic called 'When Shotta Go a Jail' in the weeks after his detention of a possession of ammunition charge.

Liquid in trouble again!?

ZJ Liquid, real name Michael Brissett, may have found himself in trouble once again. Speculation is active as to whether disciplinary action will be taken against the popular ZJ after an incident that took place during his 'Fresh 2 Death' segment on Wednesday.

The ZIP FM disc jock played an unedited version of Andrew and Wada Blood's new song Beggy Beggy on Wednesday in which an expletive was aired. The ZJ immediately covered up the blunder by switching to another song but not before it was noticed by a number of listeners.

expletive on air

Playing an expletive on air is in direct violation of the Broadcasting Commission's rules and regulations. Since the incident the radio station has been playing apologies not naming which programme it happened on. Speculation has been going around as to whether the ZJ will be getting yet another suspension, especially after ZJ Ice filled Liquid's signature 2 p.m.- 6 p.m. slot yesterday.

Several attempts to reach both ZJ Liquid and ZIP FM's station manager D'Adra Williams were unsuccessful yesterday.

When contacted, Chad Young of IRIE FM, parent company of ZIP FM, told THE WEEKEND STAR that no information on the matter could be given at the moment and news will soon be made available to the public.

This will be Liquid's, second blunder since the start of the year. In February Liquid was suspended indefinitely for playing an unedited version of Aidonia's Love It on his show. The ZJ returned to air a month later.

During his absence from radio a 'Put ZJ Liquid back on air' group was formed on social networking site Facebook.com to protest his absence. Since its start in February the page has gained over 7,000 fans.

Yesterday on the page a fan commented, "Guys, I just heard an announcement on Zip about removing some individuals cause of unfit material being played and today di boss ain't on air! Anybody know if him good? Mi poor heart really cyaan tek di stress enuh."

On social networking site Twitter.com, the news of Liquid's absence from radio yesterday also got a few comments with one person stating, "... again, Liquid's gone again?" Liquid also recently started deejaying and shot a video for his song Party Haad at the Blaze Nightclub in Portmore, St Catherine.

Dream Sounds to rock Negril!

In addition to the sun, sand, liqueur and the beach, Dream weekend is all about the vibes, and a big part of creating that vibe is the music which comes from the selectors.

Consisting of seven parties, each Dream event has a different musical vibe and a number of disc jocks to make the experience even better. For Dream weekend, taking place from July 30-August 2, there are three official sounds/DJs for the weekend are: 'Dream Coppershot', 'Dream Dimension', aka 3rd Dimension, and 'Dream Liquid.' A number of other selectors (some to be announced) will also play as well.

According to Kamal Bankay from the Dream Team, these three were chosen as the official sounds of the weekend because, "well Liquid and Coppershot were the sounds from last year and they did an excellent job in Negril and for the lead-up. Since then they have both maintained high visibility, Coppershot being a popular sound and Liquid being the number one DJ on radio. 3rd Dimension is the hottest uptown sound and one of the promoters, myself, plays on the sound."

Coppershot

The 16-year-old sound has been a fixture on the party scene both at uptown and downtown events.

One of the official sounds of Dream weekend last year and this year, Coppershot has been blazing the summer leading up to Negril.

Consisting of Matthew Gray, Shaun Anderson, Small Voice, DJ Donny, Marc Chin, DJ Sanjay, DJ Cutty, DJ Ash and Jason Henriques, Coppershot will be rotating their selectors throughout the weekend.

The sound is scheduled to perform at: Flavours, Twisted Spiritz, Daydreams, Yush, Wet N' Wild and Beer Vibes.

Gray said, "you know Coppershot is known as the high energy sound and we're gonna be even 'vibesy-er' for the Dream weekend. We're dubbing the whole weekend 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' which means that we're putting the girls first, it's all about the ladies so it's gonna be a crazy vibe, a dream come true."

ZJ Liquid

Having been selecting since 1992, ZJ Liquid has been a cornerstone at ZIP FM for the last eight years, building his 'fresh 2 death' brand and becoming one of the most popular radio jocks.

The ZJ was one of the official Dream DJs last year and this year will be playing at Flavours, Yush, Beer Vibes, Wet N' Wild and Smirnoff Xclusive.

He said, "basically last year it was breaking ground for Dream weekend and we did break it, this year is a more advance Liquid. Cause now you have Liquid di artiste so people can expect some performances and the same tough playing, the crazy party juggling - we in Negril mode."

He added, "definitely we'll have some fresh custom stuff for Negril like last year with a lot of specials for different parties. It's the biggest party weekend in Jamaica so we have to have the best playlist together."

3rd Dimension

The new kids on the block, 3rd Dimension was established a year ago and consists of DJs Kamal Bankay, Mario C and Kurt Riley - all of whom will be playing during the weekend.

Scheduled to perform at Xtreme Wet N' Wild and Smirnoff Xclusive, Mario C said, "considering that the sound is called 3rd Dimension people can expect a new dimension musically for Dream weekend. It's gonna be sum'n spectacular with a lot of remixes and dubplates."

Also scheduled to play throughout the weekend are: Crazy Neil, Chromatic, DJ Smurf, Johnny Kool, DJ Narity, Renegade, Delano, Jazzy T and a guest performance from Tony Matterhorn at Xtreme Wet 'N' Wild - as well as many more.

Originally from Jamaica, Demarco moved to the United States in 1999 where he lived and worked on his musical craft before returning to Jamaica in late 2005. Now the artiste is back in the States with the intention of working on his craft some more. "I will always come back to Jamaica, but we're really based up here right now and I'm back and forth. Jamaica a mi place, mi can't figet weh we come from. I want to get into the business here and get people to know me and stuff, I got this opportunity to get out there so I just have to take it," he said.

Not knowing how long he and his wife will be staying in the States, Demarco was glowing over the soon-to-be-birth of his son. According to Demarco his wife is seven months along, saying, "I feel good, great, I will soon have my lil son and my wife doesn't feel no way coming here to have the baby."

Rihanna Touched By Chris Brown's BET Breakdown; Are They Back In Touch?!

Hip-Hop's pop diva, Rihanna, has allegedly been in contact with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown. Those familiar with the couple are aware of the severity of the couple's past relationship, in which Rihanna was physically abused.

A source reports, “It's been almost a year since they last spoke, but Rihanna felt like she could try to be friends with Chris again," they continued. “Seeing how emotional he was on set [at the BET Awards] really touched her. She'd never seen him like that before.”

Despite speaking via telephone, the two have not been in contact since Chris was sentenced to his community service labor and put under five years probation.

The source added, “Chris told her that he felt like he's grown up in the past year. He's said he's so happy to be back in touch with her.”

Since the phone conversation, the pair has been said to exchange a few text messages. A close friend of RiRi claims that she is hopeful to see him face-to-face, which won't be able to happen under Chris' current restriction that requires him to stay 100 yards away for the next five years.

UK paper highlights Kartel's 'Clarkes' - The Sun says song has boosted sales!

Vybz Kartel and the recent voicing of his love for 'Clarks' footwear has caught the attention of at least one newspaper in the United Kingdom.

An article published in The Sun yesterday thanked the artiste for making the brand overwhelmingly popular in Jamaica.

The author John Coles begins the article by saying, "One of Britain's most traditional shoe brands has become a massive hit in Jamaica - thanks to a reggae rapper."

He then continues, "Clarks shoes are now must-have items on the Caribbean island with prices soaring, shops selling out and thieves targeting them. Local music star Vybz Kartel released a single called Clarks earlier this year, with the cover carrying pictures of his favourite styles - Wallabees, Desert Boots and Desert Treks.

The author even uses a line from Vybz Kartel's Clarkes.

He writes, "the rap features the catchy chorus line: "Everybody haffi ask weh mi get mi Clarks," before going on to mention that the deejay has since released follow up singles titled Clarkes Again and Clarkes 3 (Wear Weh Yuh Have).

According to the article, Clarks is a 185-year-old family-run company from Street, Somerset in the UK and were on the verge of closing down their main factory in 1996 in the midst of the loss of some 400 jobs and a drop in sales. Sales would eventually increase thanks to the feet of trendy entertainers.

"... they enjoyed a huge boom the following year when Oasis superstars Liam and Noel Gallagher started a trend for their Desert Boots. Thousands of indie fans followed in their footsteps and stars including The Beastie Boys, Patsy Kensit, The Spice Girls, Paul Weller and Jarvis Cocker also sported the shoes," the article states.

The article also quotes Kartel as saying he has more than 50 pairs of Clarks.

Jamaican culture

"Clarks is as much a part of the Jamaican culture as ackee and saltfish and roast breadfruit, I swear to you. Policemen wear it, gangsters wear it. Big men wear it to their work. Schoolchildren wear it to school. I personally have more than 50 pairs of Clarks. I have more than there are states in America."

Michael Borge, marketing director for Clarks in North America, confirmed the company has seen increased demand in Jamaica in recent months, the article also states before adding that "the popularity of the brand is also rising in Britain as Kartel's song is regularly played on black music station BBC 1Xtra by DJ Robbo Ranx."

In the meantime, however, deejay Vybz Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, remains in police custody here in Jamaica, as he turned himself in last week after he was among six persons listed by the St Catherine South police as a major person of interest.

Quad under new management!

The Quad in New Kingston is now under new management and there are plans to completely transform the venue.

When contacted, Dane Chin said he and Emery Meghoo were now the new general managers of the club.

"I am the new face of the club. All the previous managers are no longer here. We have taken it over to give it a facelift, a new brand, a new vibe, a new look, bring up back the premium service, the service that people used to get in the past," Chin told THE STAR.

a new vibe

Chin added, "We have a 10-year track record in promotions and events coordinations. We were called in to take over the club to rebrand and give it a new vibe. We didn't buy it. We were contracted under Nite Time Promotions to run the club."

This contract took effect on July 1 and already changes are being made to the club.

Chin said the club will continue to go by the name Quad, but eventually Oxygen and Voodoo lounges will get name changes. He said Christopher's Jazz Café will now be known as Christopher's Jazz Lounge and Bar.

"In the meantime, we are working with the name Quad but we are coming with new concepts and themes for the club. The Oxygen and Voodoo lounges have also been renovated," Chin said.

new contract

The new general manager said they have also signed a new contract with Darren and Omar Virtue to host Blitz Tuesdays for the next two months. There will also be live music on Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. in Christopher's which will be followed by The Mix with Alric and Boyd.

In addition, he said there would also be an escort service from the car park to the club, better service, as well as improvements in the lighting, music, air conditioning and general comfort.

Chin said he will be targeting young professionals and college students to go to Christopher's. There, he said, people will be given a 20 per cent discount on drinks between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays.

It has been less than a year since fast-rising reggae artiste Protoje dropped his first official single. Two singles and two music videos later, the talented artiste, who hails from the parish of St Elizabeth, is being hailed by many industry insiders as an artiste to watch.

Protoje's roots-influenced sound, along with his easy-going swagger, has caught the attention of many reggae fans, locally and overseas.

On Friday, July 22nd, Protoje will perform on the biggest event of his career when he makes his debut appearance at Reggae Sumfest 2010 on International Night 1.

"I feel very excited, because I have been going to Sumfest since I was a child. I have seen so many artistes at Sumfest that have inspired me a lot, so it will be an honour to perform on the festival," he said.

serious mark

I and my band have been performing a lot over the last 12 months, and the people seem to love what we have been doing. So I am looking to bring more of the same good music and dub vibes to the Sumfest crowd, I know they will love it."

Drake donates $2 Million... to help Mavado build learning centre in Cassava Piece!

Singjay Mavado and international superstar Drake are in the midst of building a learning center in Cassava Piece.

When THE WEEKEND STAR spoke with Mavado's manager Julian Jones-Griffith he explained that two weeks ago Drake donated US$25,000 (JA$2.15 million) towards the building of the library. The popular rapper shot the video for his latest single Find Our Love in Jamaica in April. The rapper also visited the island prior to that for vacation.

Jones-Griffith explained: "Basically Mavado and Drake shot some scenes in Cassava Piece and struck up an immediate rapport with the people there. He thought they showed him a lot of love and he was very down to earth with them and wanted to do something positive."

The idea for the learning center which includes a computer lab and a library, according to Jones-Griffith, was one Mavado had plans for so Drake decided to assist the project.

When THE WEEKEND STAR spoke to Drake he commented: "I had a great time when I was in Jamaica and the people of Cassava Piece showed me a lot of love. I just wanted to show back some love by helping out with Mavado's project on the Gullyside. It's a very positive move and something I am very happy to be a part of. Education is the key to life so to be able to assist in that process is very fulfilling."

Two weeks ago Drake gave Mavado his contribution and since then construction has started in Cassava Piece. Jones-Griffith added: "Obviously it's going to take more than what Drake gave so Mavado has contributed to it and pledges to put more towards it." Tentatively the name for the library is 'Drake and Mavado Peace Center'.

Mavado said: "I was born and grow inna Cassava Piece so mi always a look to impact di community in a positive way. We recently helped create peace between rival communities dat is going good, so we want to do sumpten new. We have been planning it for a while, when Drake was here it came up an he wanted to do sumpten to help and we mek di arrangements."

He added: "We're grateful for his contribution, it's a great gesture, he is not even a Jamaican, so for him to do dis and help build a foundation of knowledge and learning in our community is, yuh nuh, appreciated. Odda successful Jamaicans should tek a leaf out of Drake's book and gi back to di communities from weh dem born and grow."

For Mavado and his team they are looking to Corporate Jamaica to assist in the project. Jones-Griffith said: "We're reaching out to Corporate Jamaica which is always talking about transforming the garrison so it's time for them to put their money where their mouth is. LIME has already pledged to give us free Internet connection and we appreciate that."

The learning centre will be free of cost to persons from Cassava Piece as Jones-Griffith explained: "It's a community project not a business venture. People from the community are contributing to it from the ground up and are very happy about it."

Mavado has turned a peaceful leaf of late with a number of socially-conscious musical releases of late including: Messiah, Change Right Now and Can't Believe.
